I first met Shannon Vokes ,the creator and writer of SleepRunners at PalmCon (A first of its kind event hosted in West Palm Beach Florida by Martin Pierro of CosmicTimes.net)

I was drawn to his publishing booth initially because I saw he had most of his family present, his son and daughter. These three were the forerunners for the book the other family members as Shannon puts it provide support from behind the scenes at coventions and during marketing efforts. So I got to talking about this book of his SleepRunners, the dark navy blue cover caught my eye.

I picked it up and flipped through a few pages, I felt it might be a worthy read, and it was. As you may have gathered the main premise of the story takes place in a quasi sleep/dream world. However, The conflicts are not only limited to the Dream world, they find their way to leak out into ours and when they do the consequences are often fatal. In this saga the lines between reality and dreams are blurred which is a soup that trapped me from page to page.

The cast of characters has enough three dimensional debth…which I feel will help them relate to various audiences, my favorite is Raymond. I like him not so much for his personality, but for what he represents as possibile…you see Raymond is disabled in our world, but in this new world he can do and be whatever he wants. “The writing is superb, Vokes rocks.” The Art is fluid, from Panel to panel (I see why Artist Kewber Baal has been picked up by DC comics) so the Art can sand on its own feet without tons of unnecessary narration to lead the reader through the story. The colors are sharp and crisp, with little computer alterations/special effects…which sometimes can be harmful or benefitual to the entire enterprise, however, in this case it works. Based on what I’ve read in the first volume, I expect an exciting conclusion in the series coming volumes.

I say Kudos to Shannon, Kewber, Clarissa and supporters on a book well done.

This volume from a rating system of “A – F,” I give  a solid B+. This rating is awarded because the series managed to tell a complete and uniform story with a large cast of characters. The ending of the first volume does have the reviewer wanting more, the story is catching sufficient momentumt and I feel the audience will want to stay for the long hual.

 A few weeks ago I had the exclusive on documenting a behind the scenes of TS 101, a Creature Entertainment short film.

The series is the brainchild of John Ulloa and Julio Alvarez, however, it took the entire support of the Creature Entertainment team to bring it to life on camera. Today you get a chance to see some commentary from [Keith Wade] who plays the role of TS 100 (Test Subject 100).

The question is how will we get there, this film is the prelude to an ongoing series that promises to immerse your senses and alter the mediums in which you experience entertainment. TS 101 blends two disciplines, “film/theater and comics” in a continuous reality stream; where one leaves off in the storyline the other follows and picks up ( the story of this film will continue in the comic book)…

Richard is a very accomplished actor that is local to South Florida. Richard has been featured on USA’s “Burn Notice” as [Commander Jackson], QuarterLifers, “The Glades”, and America’s Most wanted as [FBI agent Don Goode].

This first issue waste no time diving into the action (usually a winning formula to catch a reader’s attention right away). The simplicity of the panels almost tells the story without words; which demonstrates great sequential story telling.

The story sets the reader up for what may seem like a normal day on the job for the lead character Trey, however, that quickly changes once he reaches his assigned location. The trouble that ensues is something Trey potentially looks for at least on some level, based on the read I get the impression that a quite day does not seem to exist in his vocabulary.

The story introduces the reader to the type of challenging assignments that Trey and his team face; it also demonstrates how the team “handles” these challenges as well. The story hits that there is more to Trey and his work relationship that it appears to be on the surface, he seems almost distant, almost as if he is working out the mysteries of the universe in his mind.

Levar Leo and I had the opportunity to discuss Trey and as far as I can gather, the story is set in a Sci-Fi future where a G.I. Joe-like  military with a TriGun mentality of “take no prisoners” is necessary to keep this world from falling apart. There are questions, some of which are not answered in this book, but (Levar promises if you hang on for the ride) will be in future issues. Questions such as why is this specialized team needed in the first place, and what is the world afraid of falling apart from?

This episode From a rating system of “A – F,” I give  a solid B. This rating is awarded because for a first time writer, Levar does a great job of depicting an easy to follow pilot. The artist, leigh, also illustrates consistent panels which guide the book in a forward moving direction, the colors are uniform and separated well. It may seem odd that I gathered all this from one issue, however, “thems  the Breaks.” This book is a great jumping on point for younger yet  mature readers and even the not so young reader, if you like it; then just go with it!

If You Like Firefly or Serenity, you’ll like SOULED.

It takes a massive team to handle a massive project, and you will find both here in Souled;  with a flock of different characters, one can only estimate that character development was quite a chore. Souled starts off as a misguided fantasy of a curious passenger, Adora, and ends with the entire crew being put in harms way.

This is due in part because of what she finds, the story then veers off in many directions eluding as to whether it’s because of what she found on something totally unrelated that is causing the current dilemma the crew finds itself.  The story is engaging from start to finish (the mystery factor helps).

My favorite aspect of the book is the first two pages, it reminds me of a movie intro, it sets the tone for the coming adventure, I think it was masterfully done. For a coming out party this piece gets a big thumbs up, I look forward to seeing what’s next – you have  my attention guys now please blow my mind, don’t let me down!

This episode From a rating system of “A – F,” I give  a solid B+. This rating is awarded because the series has attention grabbing ability, the story flows well and it is easy to follow. The art has its moments in that for the most part it is congruent which helps lead you through the pages, however at times it does seem that additional detail should be placed in certain panels; anywhooo, you can’t win them all. I would say overall it’s worth the read.

Hello, Hello, Hello Comic Natives, I know it’s been a While, but, I promise you it will be well worth it. Recently, the gang (yes I have a gang now, Comic Privy has grown…Something AWESOME!!!) and I embarked on a new venture – a talk show; one that touches on all things near and dear to your hearts in the entertainment field. We off course are going to start out with the industry I call the “Idea machine” – Comics.

So with that said, this episode is the official pilot of a show yet to be named (Comic Privy is what we have thus far but with all the creative energy flying around like a rabid missile that name may change). Today we have on set  Ken Lam, Josh Douglas, Maurice “Davie” Powers (Film Director Extraordinaire), and our special guest Keith Ruback.
